Five Essential Rug Cleaning Tips

5 consigli fondamentali per il lavaggio dei tappeti

Unsuitable washing can damage the fibres and foundation of both handmade and machine-made rugs. Before a complete wash, identify the material, inspect its condition and check the care instructions. Antique, silk, fragile and hand-knotted pieces deserve specialist assessment.

1. Remove loose dust gently

Use gentle suction suited to the rug. Keep rotating brushes away from fringes and fragile areas. Do not beat an antique, repaired or weakened rug: force can damage warp, weft and knots. Ask a specialist about deeply embedded dust.

2. Check colour stability

Unstable dyes can migrate into lighter areas during washing. A small test alone cannot guarantee a complete wash will be safe. If a clean white cloth picks up colour, stop and ask a specialist; do not soak the rug.

Discuss previous stains and products used. Both handmade and machine-made rugs vary in materials and dye stability.

3. Choose a suitable method and product

Do not use hot water, strong alkaline cleaners or a household detergent without checking compatibility. Silk, wool and mixed fibres may require different treatment. A product labelled for carpets is not automatically suitable for every oriental rug.

Before washing at home, make sure the manufacturer permits it and that you have the right equipment, space and drying arrangements. If the construction or material is uncertain, seek advice first.

4. Remove moisture and dry fully

Do not roll or store a wet rug. Trapped moisture can cause odours, colour migration and damage. A rug must dry throughout the foundation, not just at the surface. Protect the floor below and avoid uncontrolled heat or direct strong sunlight.

Drying conditions vary, so do not rely on a fixed number of hours. If you cannot provide appropriate conditions, use a specialist workshop.

5. Finish with gentle pile care

Once the rug is fully dry, any brushing should follow the pile direction with a suitable soft brush. Avoid aggressive brushing and friction. Do not treat a fragile surface as though it were a robust synthetic carpet.

Before you begin

The most useful precaution is deciding whether home washing is appropriate at all. Materials, construction, unstable dyes, old repairs and sentimental or financial value all matter.
