Fringe reweaving is one of the services most often requested by owners of Persian, oriental and antique hand-knotted rugs. The fringes are the most exposed part of a rug: the first to wear down with foot traffic, rubbing and time. For about 30 years, Art Tappeti Milano has carried out fringe reweaving and repair using traditional craft techniques, restoring the look of the rug’s edges.

Why Rug Fringes Get Damaged

Fringes are made from the same warp threads as the rug itself, but unlike the rest of the weave they do not have the protection of the knots that hold the fibres together. For this reason they are the most fragile part of the rug and the first to show signs of wear.

The most common causes of damage are daily foot traffic, rubbing against furniture or skirting boards, vacuum cleaners with overly aggressive brushes, humidity and, in some cases, moths or other insects. A rug with damaged fringes loses visual value even when the rest of it is in excellent condition.

How Fringe Reweaving Works

The work involves attaching new fringes, made by hand from materials compatible with the original ones: the same type of yarn, the same colour, the same consistency. It is carried out by craftsmen who specialise in Persian and oriental rugs and who respect the original knotting technique, to achieve an even, solid and lasting result.

Depending on the condition of the rug, the work may involve only the most damaged fringes or the entire edge. Before starting, we always assess the rug so we can propose the most suitable solution, without unnecessary work.

Fringe Reweaving or Repair? The Difference

Fringe reweaving is a specific, targeted job, different from a full restoration of the rug. It is the ideal solution when the rest of the rug is in good condition and the damage is limited to the fringes or edges. If the rug also has tears, holes or more extensive deterioration, a more complete restoration is advisable, which we also carry out in our workshop with the same craftsmanship.

Fringe reweaving is a more limited job than a full restoration, and the time it takes depends on the size of the rug and the extent of the damage. We offer a free, no-obligation evaluation after seeing the rug, either at our shop at Via delle Forze Armate 43 in Milan or from photos sent on WhatsApp.

Home Pickup and Delivery

If you cannot bring the rug to the shop yourself, we offer home pickup and delivery in Milan and the surrounding province. Once the fringes are done, the rug is returned ready to go back in your home, with the same care with which it was collected.

Can the fringes of an antique rug be redone?

Yes. On antique and fine rugs we work with yarns that match in type and colour, so as to respect the original character of the piece and not alter its value.

How long does fringe reweaving take?

It depends on the size of the rug and how extensive the damage is. After seeing the rug, we tell you the timing and cost following a free evaluation.

Can I send a photo for an initial evaluation?
