Buying Rugs in Milan: How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Home

A visit to a rug shop in Milan is more useful when you bring photographs of your room and accurate measurements. Colour and pattern catch the eye, but a successful purchase also considers proportions, materials, everyday use and maintenance.

This guide helps you prepare for your visit and ask practical questions so you can choose a rug that suits your home, taste and budget.

Start with the room and measurements

Measure the available area and the position of your furniture. You can mark the footprint with paper tape on a suitable floor, avoiding delicate surfaces. Check doors and walking routes.

In a living room, consider the sofa, armchairs and coffee table together. Under a dining table, allow for chairs pulled back. In a hallway, make sure a runner does not obstruct doors or circulation. A room photograph and a simple measured sketch are more useful than a rigid rule about size.

Choose materials for everyday use

A busy entrance and an occasionally used room have different requirements. Ask what the rug is made of, how it is constructed and how that particular piece should be maintained. Wool, silk and blended fibres should be assessed alongside the foundation, condition and intended use, rather than by touch alone.

If you have pets, explain your needs so you can discuss the weave, fringes, cleaning and household routines. Ask how you will care for the rug from the beginning.

Persian, oriental or kilim: what are you buying?

“Oriental” is a broad description, rather than a precise origin. “Persian” refers to geographic origin, while “kilim” describes a flat-woven construction. Ask the seller to explain these terms in relation to the rug in front of you.

Look at the front, back and ends, and ask about previous work. Origin, materials, construction and age should distinguish documented facts from estimates. A transparent description matters more than an unverifiable story.

Check the condition

For a used or antique rug, inspect uneven wear, thin areas, ends and disclosed repairs. A repair does not automatically make a rug unsuitable, but it should be considered alongside price and intended use.

Where possible, see the rug laid flat. Look from different directions and under different lighting. Phone photographs can alter colour and contrast: use them to shortlist, then compare them with the actual piece.

Compare prices fairly

Compare rugs with similar dimensions, materials, construction and condition. Ask what explains a price difference, what will appear on the sales documentation and whether the rug you are viewing is the exact piece you will receive.

For an in-store purchase, confirm exchange, transport and delivery arrangements beforehand. For an online purchase, read the current terms of sale; do not assume both channels have identical conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Can Persian rugs work with modern furniture?

Yes. Consider proportions, colours and the relationship between the room’s elements. Every furnishing need not share the same style.

Is an antique rug always more expensive?

No. Age is only one factor; materials, quality, condition and the individual piece also matter.

Are photographs enough to choose?

They help you shortlist. View the rug in person when possible; for a remote purchase, request detailed images and written information.
